Dental Anxiety and Phobia

Dental Care That Takes Your Comfort Seriously

If going to the dentist makes you nervous, you are far from alone. Dental anxiety can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, including patients who have not been to a dentist for a long time because of their fears.

At Foley Family Dentistry, we want you to feel comfortable telling us how you feel. You do not need to apologize for being nervous or explain why you have waited to seek care. What matters is that you are here now, and we can work together to make your experience feel more manageable.

What Causes Dental Anxiety?

There is no single reason someone may feel anxious about dental care. For some people, the feeling is connected to a previous experience. For others, it may be a fear of discomfort, needles, sounds, loss of control, or simply not knowing what to expect.

You may also feel self-conscious about the condition of your teeth or worry about what we might find.

Whatever is making you uneasy, please tell us. Understanding your concerns gives us an opportunity to personalize your experience and find ways to help you feel more comfortable.

Dental Anxiety vs. Dental Phobia

Dental anxiety can range from mild nervousness before an appointment to significant fear that makes receiving care difficult. Dental phobia generally describes a more intense fear that can lead someone to postpone or completely avoid dental visits.

The terminology is less important to us than understanding how you feel.

Whether you are slightly nervous, extremely fearful, or somewhere in between, we will listen to your concerns without judgment and work with you to make dental care feel more approachable.

Communication Can Make a Difference

One of the most helpful things you can do is talk to us before treatment begins. Tell us what worries you, what has been difficult during previous dental experiences, and what might help you feel more at ease.

We can explain what to expect before we begin and keep you informed as we go. If you prefer less detail, tell us that, too. Some patients feel calmer when they know exactly what is happening, while others would rather not hear every step.

Your preferences matter.

You Are Allowed to Ask for a Break

Feeling like you have some control over what happens can make dental treatment less stressful.

Before we begin, we can establish a simple signal, such as raising your hand, to let us know that you need us to stop. If you need a moment to rest, ask a question, or simply regroup, we can pause.

We would rather know that you are uncomfortable than have you try to push through the appointment without telling us.

Simple Ways to Feel More Comfortable

Different strategies work for different people. Depending on your preferences and the treatment being provided, you may find it helpful to:

  • Practice slow, controlled breathing
  • Listen to music through personal headphones when appropriate
  • Use distraction to shift your attention away from treatment
  • Ask questions before the procedure begins
  • Have us explain treatment one step at a time
  • Establish a signal for taking breaks
  • Schedule appointments at a time of day when you tend to feel more relaxed

If you already know something that helps you feel calmer in medical or dental settings, let us know.

Can Sedation Help With Dental Anxiety?

For some patients and procedures, oral sedation may be an option to help reduce anxiety and make dental treatment more comfortable.

Sedation is not necessary or appropriate for everyone. We will review your health history, medications, level of anxiety, and planned treatment before determining whether oral sedation is an appropriate choice for you.

If sedation is recommended, we will explain what to expect, how to prepare, and any transportation or recovery instructions you need to follow.

Have You Been Avoiding the Dentist Because You Are Embarrassed?

Sometimes fear is only part of the reason a person stays away from the dentist. You may also worry that we will judge you because it has been years since your last appointment or because you know your teeth need attention.

Our job is not to lecture you about the past. It is to understand what is happening now and help you decide what to do next.

Dental problems are often easier to address before they become more complicated, but it is never helpful to make someone feel ashamed for seeking care. Starting with an examination and a conversation can give you a clearer understanding of your oral health and your options.

Take Dental Care One Step at a Time

You do not have to overcome every dental fear before you make an appointment. Sometimes the first step is simply finding a dental team that is willing to listen.

Tell us what concerns you, ask as many questions as you need, and let us know what would make your visit easier. We will work with you to help you receive the dental care you need in a way that respects your comfort and individual concerns.
